Around the Vegetable Garden in 30 Days

March 21, 2014 by Jeanne

Because I needed a kick in the plants...
I signed up for the A-Z 30 day blog challenge. What is the A-Z blog challenge? It’s a little kick in my plants, so to speak. It’s a group effort to inspire bloggers to consistently blog. The deal is simple – you have to write and post at least 100 words, starting April 1, with a topic and title beginning with the letter A. You get Sundays off, so there are 26 days of blogging in April, each day corresponding to a letter of the alphabet. Each blogger then promises to visit the blog of 5 other people, perhaps the names below theirs on the master list on the A-Z website, and leave comments, follow them, etc. The goal is to help everyone in the group improve their blogging and generate new followers.
April is Edibles Month at Seven Oaks, the Home and Garden Joy Blog
So what will I feature? Edibles – fruits, vegetables, herbs! A to Z! I’m so excited. From asparagus to zucchini, each day in April I’m going to profile a different vegetable. How to grow it, types, yummies on Wednesday (cooking whatever vegetable happens to fall on Wednesday, which is now Fresh Food Wednesday too) and more.
.
.
Now that won’t stop me from posting on other things, too. That’s the fun of this! You may get more than one post from me each day, especially near the beginning of the month when I share the monthly gardening tips. I’m also working on a short eBook that compiles the recent blog post series I wrote on raised bed vegetable gardening into one simple, inexpensive eBook and booklet you can purchase if you wish.  That idea came from Heba, a blog reader who contacted me via Facebook. I really appreciate the feedback and encourage others to share ideas here, too.

We’re Growing in New Directions
There’s other big news for the blog, too. We’ll be transitioning this blog over to a new website and blog sometime in late spring – early summer. The new site will offer more features, as well as more information.  I hope to return to my roots of writing and sharing articles and information on organic gardening, basic gardening practices, recipes from the garden and health and wellness from the garden on our new website, Home Garden Joy.  Seven Oaks, Home Garden Joy, will launch late spring or early summer, so stay tuned.
.
.

In the meantime, rock on, lovely people. Have a great Friday. I’m heading out to the garden center in a little bit to buy pansies for the window boxes. I don’t care if the weatherman is predicting snow again for next week, it’s spring and I want pansies!

Growing Strawberry Plants

Growing strawberry plants is one of my favorite gardening adventures. Once they get growing, strawberry plants produce abundant strawberry fruit. Outwit the birds, and you’ve got your own personal fruit supply for several weeks, or you can make a strawberry jam recipe that tastes like a burst of summer. Growing Strawberry Plants To grow healthy…

Recipe Fail – Coconut Bars

Each weekend, I dig out my favorite cookbook – the Fannie Farmer Cookbook, 13th Edition. I flip through the pages, skimming the recipes, checking to see if I have the ingredients to make those that catch my eye. And then, I make the recipe, usually late Sunday afternoon after all the chores are done. It’s…

Propagating Peach Trees from Softwood Cuttings

We decided that propagating peach trees from softwood cuttings was the way to go when we couldn’t find the variety we wanted at the store this past week. The best eating peach we’ve ever grown here at Seven Oaks Farm is “Red Haven.” It was recommended by our neighbor, a man whose family has farmed…
