My garden was featured in Virginia Gardener magazine! It’s in the September 2016 issue, on pages 58 to 61.
Virginia Gardener magazine is a regional magazine focused on gardening in yes, you guessed it – Virginia. I’m the Ask the Expert columnist. I was honored when a few months ago, the editor asked if I could write a profile about my own garden. Included with the article are eight original photos, including this gem. You knew one of the cats had to get into the pages of the magazine, right?
If you had asked me 10 years ago if I would have dreamed that this piece of woodland would one day be a garden featured in a mid-sized circulation magazine, I would have laughed myself silly. I had no plans to build such an elaborate garden. No plans to complete a butterfly habitat, and certainly no plans to own six cats! One cat surely, but six? You’ve got to be kidding…
I had other plans for my life. At the time, I owned a thriving ecommerce business. I sold equine art for artists. I had plans to open a retail store to sell equine art. I had plans…
God delights in our plans. He delights in shaking them up and handing us something better. I’m reminded of Luke 11:11 when Jesus says, “What father among you, if his son asks for bread, would give him a stone, or if he asks for a fish, would give him a snake instead of the fish?”
Today I have so much more than I ever envisioned. The art business is closed, but the writing business is thriving, and writing for a living was a dream I have cherished since childhood. God delighted in giving me that gift and helping me use it in ways I never could have anticipated.
I had always dreamed of living on a farm, and creating a garden, and enjoying time puttering around the home, gardens, sewing machine…and this is my life now, in ways I could not have dreamed of before.
All of this is represented in that article. Not only did I build the garden along with my husband, I raised many of those plants from seeds. I wrote the article. I created the photos…
It’s all a miracle to me how it all came together, and I am just humbled and thankful for it all.
I hope you enjoy the article. Pick up a copy at your favorite garden center, Lowe’s or Wal-Mart (in Virginia only – sorry folks elsewhere!)
