It goes by the Latin or botanical name of&nbsp;<em>Cucumis melo cantalupensis.&nbsp;<\/em>It is rounder, smaller, and has a light green skin. If you saw it in the market, you wouldn&#8217;t call it a cantaloupe, but might ask the grocery what fruit it is.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Muskmelon is the older name for the fruit, with &#8220;musk&#8221; a Persian word meaning &#8220;perfume&#8221; and &#8220;melon&#8221; a word from old French that means &#8220;apple shaped fruit.&#8221;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The European and North American types listed here &#8211; the two big categories &#8211; are cantaloupes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any variety within <em>Cucumis melo reticulatus<\/em> or <em>Cucumis melo cantalupensis<\/em> is a cantaloupe!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s proper, in the discussion of cantaloupe vs muskmelon, to call all possible cantaloupes muskmelons and leave it at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But really, a cantaloupe by any other name is&#8230; a muskmelon.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"666\" src=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cantaloupe-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"cantaloupe vs muskmelon\" class=\"wp-image-7683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cantaloupe-5-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cantaloupe-5-1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cantaloupe-5-1-768x511.jpg 768w, https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cantaloupe-5-1-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/cantaloupe-5-1-600x400.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-do-you-know-when-a-cantaloups-is-ripe\">How Do You Know When a Cantaloups Is Ripe?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>All cantaloupes and muskmelons are fun to <a href=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/2018\/08\/growing-cantaloupe-for-first-time-gardeners.html\">grow in the home garden<\/a>. They ripen on or off the vine, but vine-ripened ones are sweeter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cantaloupes develop a telltale yellow spot usually on the area where the ribbed skin touches the earth when they are ripe. They develop a sweet fragrance, too, close to the taste of the actual fruit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find that the easier they pull from the vine, the more ripe they are. True muskmelon slip from the vine when they are ripe; cantaloupe may cling a bit but with a slight twist or turn of the fruit you can harvest them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Store at room temperature if the cantaloupe isn&#8217;t entirely ripe.
