Specifically, rescuing dozens upon dozens of plants that <a href=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/2011\/06\/garden-volunteers-blooming-today-sunflowers.html\">self-seeded<\/a> throughout the perennial garden last fall and are now producing seedlings in unwelcome spots. After digging up my third bucketful of plants, I thought that self-seeding plants would be great topics this week since not many people know about them. Today&#8217;s focus is on the toughest sunny plant I&#8217;ve found: <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Coreopsis tinctoria<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: bold;\">Coreopsis tinctoria (Golden Tickseed)<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Looking at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.plants.usda.gov\/java\/profile?symbol=COTI3\">USDA map<\/a> of North America, it&#8217;s amazing that <a href=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/2011\/06\/odd-red-coreopsis-in-the-garden-today.html\"><span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Coreopsis tinctoria<\/span><\/a> grows wild in all states except for Alaska, Nevada, New Mexico, and New Hampshire. How New Hampshire escaped I cannot fathom since the weather conditions are so similar to Vermont and the nearby states. I can understand Alaska, for the winters may be too cold, and Nevada and New Mexico have such hot, dry climates that it&#8217;s possible the little tickseed doesn&#8217;t like it.<\/p>\n<p>In Texas, according to the <a href=\"http:\/\/friendswoodplants.blogspot.com\/2009\/04\/coreopsis-tinctoria.html\">Wild Plants of Friendswood<\/a> blog, <span style=\"font-style: italic;\">Coreopsis tinctoria<\/span> grows wild by the roadside.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1885 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/coreopsis.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"491\" height=\"383\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/coreopsis.jpg 491w, https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/coreopsis-150x117.jpg 150w, https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/06\/coreopsis-300x234.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 491px) 100vw, 491px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The plants like firm, dry seedbeds, but not too dry. They flower more with fertilization, but be warned &#8211; they also produce more seeds. The plants grow wispy stalks one to four feet tall and produce small, sunflower-like blossoms. They do need full sun &#8211; the more sun, the better.<\/p>\n<p>The seeds will spread out around the Coreopsis plant, but be warned; they can be terribly invasive.<\/p>\n<p>In my garden, for example, I not only have new Coreopsis plants coming up around the circumference of where last year&#8217;s mother plant was growing, but I have Coreopsis coming up in the driveway (I&#8217;m not kidding &#8211; in fact, these plants look the healthiest!) and among many of the other perennials. These have to be dug out since I don&#8217;t want coreopsis overshadowing the <a href=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/2011\/01\/tough-plants-for-tough-spots-echinacea.html\">Echinacea<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/homegardenjoy.com\/site\/2012\/09\/how-to-grow-gaillardia-or-blanket-flower.html\">gaillardia<\/a>, and yarrow.<\/p>\n<p>Too much Coreopsis? Try moving these tough plants to areas where they can naturalize. If they get too invasive, you&#8217;ll have to weed them out.<\/p>\n<p>For novice gardeners, Coreopsis is super-easy to grow from seed.
