RIP Barbara K

February 19, 2010 by Jeanne

Please say a prayer today for Barbara K. She was the mother of my friend, Katie and a woman who touched many lives. She died from cancer yesterday.

Barbara was a family therapist and counseled many people throughout her career. She loved her children and was a devoted mother and grandmother. When Katie first began riding and showing horses (how we met), I remember Barbara at a horse show, gingerly holding the bridle of some placid school horse. She’d pat the horse’s nose and talk to it for luck. She had flame red hair and wore bright colors and long, dangling earrings, and she always seemed to have a smile and a laugh and a twinkle in her eye.

There are probably hundreds, if not thousands of people, she touched with her love throughout her life, either as a friend or in her professional role in life. I think Frank Capra got it right in “It’s a Wonderful Life” – we never know just how many people we’ve helped. I think Barbara helped an enormous amount of people in her roles as wife, mother, sister, friend, teacher and counselor.

I lost my own mom right around the time I met Katie, back in college. Getting the news yesterday about Barbara, Katie’s mom, just sort of pulled the scab off my old hurt of losing my own mom. It’s funny that way, isn’t it? 20 years can pass after you lose someone you love and you think you are over it, and then something happens and the hurt is there. It just got numb for a while.

Say a little prayer for Barbara today, will you? And for Katie too – she was extremely close to her mother, and this is going to be a big loss for her and her sister.

Barbara was a wonderful person w a beautiful soul. We met over 25 years ago and she touched my life from that day forward. She was a rare person that once met you instantly felt comfortable with. She had helped so many many people, whether it was one on oNe, group therapy or a workshot. I credit her with Helping me become the person I am today. My wife said that Barbara is probably having group theraphy in Heaven, I’m sure God can use help from an Angel.

Barbara, I’m certain you’re reading this from Heaven. Thank you from for me, my wife and sons aNd family. May you rest in peace. With great Love…Steven S

Thanks all for your kind words.

Steve, I know exactly what you mean. I met Barbara when I became friend with Katie in college…it was like we were all instantly part of the family, going over their house for Christmas, to the beach in the summer. She was so kind to us all. She had something to give to everyone. If God does let people become angels for others, I feel sure Barbara will be sharing that love and joy with all of us on earth.

    Lisa, thank you 🙂

    Hi,
I was doing a search for Barbara after I heard of her passing. She was my godmother. My parents were very very good friends with her, and her ex-husband (Katie’s dad) from their college years. Unfortunately the passing of time led us all in different directions. I was sad to hear of her illness. I’m sorry for your loss, please extend my condolences to Katie and Mary Beth, from Jill Kirby. Thank you.

Growing Eggplant: A Guide for Gardeners

Growing eggplant (a small garden devoted to fresh, seasonal edibles) is relatively easy in zone 7, where I garden, but combating the bugs is another story. Volunteer Plants – Nature’s Unexpected Gifts

Volunteer plants are one of nature’s most delightful surprises. They spring up unbidden, often in places we didn’t expect—cracks in sidewalks, corners of compost piles, or nestled beside a stone foundation, like the vibrant coleus seedlings growing near my deck shown in these pictures. These botanical freeloaders aren’t weeds; they’re plants that have reseeded themselves…
