Columbine Flowers

May 5, 2013 by Jeanne

aquilegia or columbine flower

Columbine flowers, also called aquilegia, are an easy to grow North American native perennial flower. I have two cultivars in my garden, and both thrive here in south central Virginia. They’re tough plants and I’ve only lost a few transplanted from seedlings grow indoors; I didn’t water them enough, and they died during dry periods If I remember to baby them along through their first few months of life, they reward me with plentiful blossoms and seedlings for years to come.

Speaking of seedlings, columbine does seed plentifully – and I mean plentifully! I look at it like “free plants” and move them from one shady spot to another, but if you have a small garden, be prepared to give away extra plants to friends, neighbors and any takers.

Hello!!! Columbine eludes me. Doesn’t like all my sun and heat and wind. Yours look so good.
