The Best Gifts for Gardeners

November 2, 2020 by Jeanne

If you’re looking for the best gifts for gardeners, I’ve got you covered! The list below includes gifts for the urban gardener, the new gardener, and the green thumb.

The Best Gifts for Gardeners, New or Advanced

I’ve put together this list of the best gifts for gardeners to help you steer through the maze of gadgets, gifts, and gimmicks available in the garden center (virtual) aisle as you shop for that special someone in your life.

This year is probably going to do down in history as the one in which more people than ever before took up gardening as a hobby. Food insecurity, brought about by the global pandemic, along with more free time at home (also thanks to the pandemic) created the perfect environment encouraging more people to get outside, dig in the dirt, and grow their own food, herbs, flowers, or all three.

What Do You Get for a Gardener?

I’ve been a gardener almost my whole life except for a brief period in my late teens and early adulthood when I thought gardening wasn’t cool (silly me). Like many long-time gardeners, I have a garage full of tools.

But I always appreciate something new and especially a “splurge” tool that I wouldn’t necessarily buy for myself. I’ve included a few such items on this list.

Does Your Gardener Focus on Specific Plants?

I’ve started getting into growing orchids, and I’ve managed to keep two alive in my office (so far). On my Christmas wish list this year is another orchid, a special cattleya that I’ve had my eye on for a long time that blooms with a strong fragrance.

Although you may think that you can only buy plants in person, there are many mail order companies specializing in living plants. Most orchid growers, for example, will ship plants via overnight delivery. They’re experienced at packaging tender plants like orchids, African violets, miniature roses, succulents, or whatever someone loves growing and ensuring that the plants arrive alive.

Try to find out if your special someone loves a particular kind of plant. If you aren’t sure about buying a live plant, how about a gift certificate?

Trenkle German Black Forest Weather House TU 850

Okay, so it’s not sophisticated, and it’s not one of those super-duper weather stations…but it’s fun, it’s playful, and I have one (inherited from my uncle) and I love it. Who doesn’t love little weather gadgets? If the girl swings out of the house, it’s sunny, and if the boy peeks out, it’s going to rain. Plus, gnomes. Garden gnomes. What’s not to love? How to Prepare Raised Beds for Spring Planting

The snow and ice have finally melted. In the mornings when I walk my dog through our farm, I can hear a rooster crowing on a neighboring farm. Cardinals have begun singing in the dawn. It’s spring, folks. And while the calendar reminds me we can still feel winter’s icy breath, spring planting is just…

Swedish Tea Bread

I first made Swedish tea bread for my 50th birthday. Three of my friends have birthdays in the same month and invited me to their family group birthday celebration (they are all relatives). I shaped the bread into braided rings and decorated it with sliced almonds. It was a hit, and I have made it…
